Q. My roommate was arrested a few hours ago. He tried to call me from inside the jail but I was having a hard time getting the collect call system set up on my cell phone. I think he wants me to help him bail out but I’m not sure. Is there a way for me to get a message to him? I finally got the phone thing worked out and I want him to call me back.
A. Unfortunately, the jails simply aren’t that customer service oriented. The only way to speak with someone who is being detained at one of the San Mateo County Jails is for them to contact you. You can’t call in and leave a message. Maguire Jail corrections officers don’t pass on messages to inmates regardless as to whether the call is coming from a family member, an attorney of a bondsman. If you don’t want to wait for your friend to call you back you can contact the jail about trying to schedule an in-person visit, but in most cases, those only take place during set daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday.
