I bailed my husband out a few months ago but the District Attorney wound up dropping the case. Our attorney suggested we contact the bail bonds company to ask about getting our money back but the person I talked to said they won’t refund anything. What gives? When can we expect to get this back and who do I need to call to make sure that happens?
Unfortunately, you’ve received some bad information from your attorney. The fee that you pay to a San Mateo bail bonds company is non-refundable no matter what happens in court. It’s considered to be earned by the bondsman, in full, at the time the defendant has been released from custody. If you signed up for a monthly payment plan you should know that you’ll still need to continue making payments until your balance is resolved. If you stop making payments, you run the risk of having your account turned over to collections, which will have a negative impact on your credit score.
