Members of the San Mateo Police Department said they have arrested suspects who are believed to have robbed the home of a 79 year-old woman. The incident took place in February of this year. Officers said the woman was at home alone at the time the robbery took place. Three men reportedly entered the home through an unlocked door. One held the woman at gunpoint while his accomplices ransacked her house.
First responders found the woman had been locked in her bedroom. It was during this time that she was able to get to a telephone in order to call police. A San Mateo Police Department spokesperson said they captured one of the suspects as he attempted to flee the scene of the crime.
Defendant Jovanni Aguliar was booked into the Maguire Jail a short time later. It is unclear whether he hired a San Mateo bondsman in order to obtain a pretrial release. Investigators said they were able to positively identify the other two robbers based on evidence collected at the crime scene. The other individuals were apprehended in Mexicali. They were booked into a jail close to the US / Mexico border but have since been extradited to San Mateo County for prosecution. They each face charges of elder abuse, conspiracy, kidnapping and armed robbery. Bail information was not immediately available but it is believed each of the defendants is being held in lieu of at least $60,000 bond.
The robbers are due to appear in court later this month.
