A spokesperson for the San Mateo Police Department said officers are urging residents to remember to lock their car doors. This, they said, is due to an emerging trend of vehicle burglaries.
This is not to say that those who lock doors and windows are entirely safe. Last weekend there were several reported “smash and grab” incidents within the downtown area.
Officers say that items of value should be removed from parked vehicles. If you are shopping, bags and boxes should be stowed in the trunk and out of view. Cell phone, computer and iPad charges should also be removed from sight. Some criminals will break into a car based on seeing a charger alone, as this usually indicate hot-ticket items are hidden within the vehicle.
Officers also warn that distracted shoppers are a favorite target of would-be thieves. Shoppers should also refrain from texting or talking on their cell phones while walking from the store to their car. They suggest mall goers make sure they are aware of their surroundings at all times. It is also recommended to park in well lit areas, to refrain from carrying large quantities of cash and to shop with others when possible.
