Sources within the San Mateo Police Department have confirmed that officers have been receiving complaints about a new phone scam that is targeting local residents.
The caller claims to be with the US Department of Treasury agents, they said, and proceeds to tell whomever answers the phone that they are either A) a prize winner who has money coming to them or B) owes money to law enforcement.
If the caller uses the prize-winner talk track they then ask for personal information so they can “process the winnings” and mail out a check.
Officers said residents should be wary about giving out any identifying information over the phone and that people should trust their instincts. If something seems to be too good to be true, they said, it probably is.
KRON4 reports that officers also said if a caller seems suspicious, it’s usually for good reason.
