The city of San Carlos is located in the San Francisco Peninsula area of San Mateo County. The most recent census data notes the area has a population of just under 29,000. Residents often comment on their liking of the city’s small town feel and it’s proximity to both San Francisco and San Jose.
In 2010, the San Carlos PD was dissolved in an effort to help balance the city’s budget. Since that time San Carlos police department services have been provided by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies stationed at the San Carlos Police Department Substation say they are pleased to be part of a law enforcement agency that has helped rank the county as the second safest urban county in California. They note that accomplishment has been a true team effort. It is only through working with local government, residents and business owners that they are able to keep local streets safe. Deputies said they will continue to focus on crime prevention and work each day to keep crime levels low.
This station does not have its own jail. When someone is arrested within the San Carlos city limits they will be transported to one of the Redwood City jails in order to be booked and processed into the system. Bail bonds can be posted at any of the San Mateo County jails 24-hours a day, 365-days a year.
